How to read a REACH test report

A REACH test report is not a pass/fail document.

Most buyers look at the top line of a REACH report, see “Pass” or “Compliant,” and close the file. That one word won’t tell you whether your inflatable tent clears customs in Rotterdam or Hamburg six months from now.

Detection limits: the first number to check

Every substance on a REACH report has a detection limit, meaning the lowest concentration the lab can reliably measure. A report that lists “phthalates: not detected” sounds clean until you check whether the detection limit was 500 ppm or 1,000 ppm. The enforceable REACH Annex XVII limit for DEHP, DBP, and BBP is 0.1% by weight, or 1,000 ppm. A lab reporting at 500 ppm leaves you a safety cushion. A lab reporting at exactly the regulatory threshold gives you none.

A real compliance program runs tests at fixed intervals tied to production, not once a year when a customer happens to ask.

Frequency of testing and batch consistency

The fastest way to judge a supplier is to ask how often they test. The answer tells you more than any certificate. Some mills check incoming resin rolls once a quarter. Others test every production batch. Inflatable tent PVC relies on phthalate plasticizers that shift between resin lots, so a quarterly schedule can miss a rising concentration for weeks. If the supplier cannot produce a phthalate test report for your camping tent PVC batch, keep looking.
